A Beagle Birthday

Today Molly the Beagle turned 9 years old. She's gotten to be quite a nice old girl. She spends a lot of time sleeping, keeping an eye on the neighborhood and trying to steal food from the kiddos. But the kiddos love her. Even when she steals their food.

Molly really has started enjoying the kids. This wasn't always the case.

I remember one night when the kids were just home from the hospital. It had been a pretty long night already. Douglas and I were both up feeding someone in the early morning hours. Someone else was busy screaming. Molly usually slept on our bed and was laying at the end of it while we were busy with the babies. She slowly stood up, looked at us and jumped off the bed. She then crawled underneath our bed in her "cave". She was there about 5 minutes, crawled out from under the bed, glared at us again, walked out of the room and down the stairs. We found her the next morning on the couch.

As the kids got older, they got more mobile. She really wasn't a fan of the "drunken sailor walking" stage or the "pull the long pretty ears and hey look at this fabulous tail" stage. They were fast and they were everywhere. She stayed pretty clear of them for quite a few years.

But that's all changed. They love Molly now. They love giving her hugs. In the evening she follows them up to bedtime and will get a bit feisty wanting to play. We catch a glimpse of the adorable little puppy in the sweet old dog. They know that in our family there are 3 girls and 3 boys. They know not to wake her up when she's sleeping and they fight over who gets to give her dinner.

Every Birthday Girl deserves some Birthday Gifts and the kids each picked out something for Molly. She got a can of dog food for dinner (as opposed to that horrible dry awful dog food we've been feeding her for years), a bag of teeth chewing treats and a special treat from Sam.

When we were in the store he found a box of dog treats. He told me, "We have to get these treats for Molly so she knows we love her". The treats were in the shape of hearts. Now that's true Puppy Love.

Molly checking out her gifts!
